Mid-Coast Energy Systems to Sponsor Karl’s Kids

On March 3rd and 4th, and for th fifth year, Mid-Coast Energy Systems will sponsor the opening ceremonies during the 5th Annual Karl’s Kids Ski Day at Sugarloaf Mountain Resort.  Karl’s Kids is a Damariscotta -Newcastle Rotary event that honors the late Rotarian and athlete KarlBerger.  The organization raises funds that help less fortunate kids and teens in Lincoln County participate in sports or outdoor activities so that they may benefit from all of the life lessons that being involved in athletics teach.

Mid-Coast Energy’s Jamie Keene will represent the company at this important family oriented event. Pictured above, Event co-coordinator Mike Hall & Mid-Coast Energy's Jamie Keene.

Fire department accepts MCES generator donation

Chris Carter shows Cheif, Mike Dostie, how to operate the new generator On Dec. 18, firefighters arrived to the Somerville Fire Department to discover the generator they used to power the furnace had been stolen. Central Maine Power, busy with recent storms, had yet to connect electrical service - one of the last steps needed to complete the new station.  The building must stay heated at all times to keep fire trucks from freezing and ready at a moment’s notice.  The cost of a new generator would have forced the department to raise more money to complete the building.

Enter MCES technician and firefighter Ryan Gallagher, who said, “When I read the article in the Lincoln County News I thought there might be something we, as a company can do, so I brought the situation to management.” Without hesitation, it was agreed MCES would donate a new Generac 5500 generator.  Empathy, brotherhood and general concern for the communities MCES serves were factors in the company’s decision.

There are many volunteer firefighters among MCES staff. In addition to Gallagher, who is Nobleboro fire chief, John Potter is the captain in Edgecomb. Paul Stebner and Chris Carter are both with the Nobleboro Fire Department, Stebner as assistant chief, and John Blodgett is a lieutenant with the Waldoboro Fire Department. Somerville Fire Dept. Chief Mike Dostie (center, front) and Martha Staples (left, front) Safety Officer of the Somerville Fire Dept., accept a new Generac 5500 Portable Generator from Mid-Coast Energy Systems Jan. 3. Also pictured are owners of MCE and company employees who are volunteer firefighters. Left to right behind Dostie and Staples are: MCE President and co-owner Bill Morgner; MCE co-owner Ron Russell; John Blodgett, MCE Installations Manager and Lieutenant of Waldoboro Fire Dept.; John Potter, MCE Technician and Capt. of Edgecomb Fire Dept.; Chris Carter, MCE Technician and Nobleboro Fire Dept.; Paul Stebner, MCE Lead Electrical Technician and Asst. Fire Chief of Nobleboro Fire Dept.; MCE co-owner David Gamage; Ryan Gallagher, MCE Technician and Fire Chief of Nobleboro. (Photo courtesy of Mid-Coast Energy Systems)

“I know that we all understand that our job at MCE comes first, however the owners of the company show their support for firefighters 100 percent by allowing us to respond as needed. I have often been told by one or more of the owners that if their own house were on fire, they’d want enough manpower available,” Blodgett said.

Bill's Coffin

In August, MCES sponsored the Lincoln County Community Theater’s production of “Oliver!”.  Company co-owner and President Bill Morgner built and donated a hand-crafted coffin that was used as a large prop on the set.

The coffin was delivered in time for opening night, with help from the MCES crew. Assisting with the delivery was company co-owner David Gamage, Tim Harriman, Bob Jackson and Morgner.

In other community news, MCES staff and crew volunteered on a Saturday morning in June to help deliver tables and chairs to the annual Pirates Rendezvous in downtown Damariscotta.

Each year the pirates sail up the river, and then dock at the pier and take over the Twin Villages for the day, roaming through Newcastle and Damariscotta.

Pumpkin Festival

Motorists may have noticed last Fall that MCES had a giant pumpkin on the front lawn. This was a marker to guide visitors to the 4th annual Damariscotta Pumpkin Fest and Regatta scheduled for Oct. 3-11. Giant pumpkins were carved, painted or both, and this year MCES sponsored a pumpkin  painted by Holly-Marie Haining of SeaWitch Studio in Waldoboro.
